For 100 years, Bishop McVinney School (formerly Saint Michael's School) has been known for its great diversity. Back in the day, our classrooms were occupied by immigrants (and the children of immigrants) from Eastern and Western Europe.
Today, the cultural and ethnic backgrounds of our students reach across five continents, including North and South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe.
We cherish and celebrate this rich diversity as one community. Each day, we live in service to one another, guided by Christ Jesus and our Catholic faith.
The history of our school in South Providence is rich in blessings, memories and achievements - it is truly an urban oasis - but we cannot ignore the struggles that affect our families, even today.
Job and food insecurity
Housing setbacks
Unreliable transportation
Financial hardship
All of us can be impacted by these challenges from time to time, but our families experience the hardships to a greater degree in our inner-city community in the heart of South Providence. Over 80% of students receive tuition assistance through the Catholic Schools Office of the Diocese of Providence. They also participate in the free and reduced-priced meal benefits program through the Rhode Island Department of Education.
The Diocesan Catholic School Office contributes tuition assistance to several schools, but the unfunded need across the Diocese continues to grow annually.
